Finding our Way Through the Labyrinth: Healthcare and  Social Services Concepts

Navigating the American healthcare system can be confusing and overwhelming. For many LEP patients, the US healthcare system provides one more layer of stress and complexity for them to contend with. As interpreters, we often walk alongside patients as they struggle to navigate the healthcare system to receive the care they need. It is essential that we have a basic understanding of healthcare concepts and terminology.

Health is intricately intertwined with many other aspects of daily living. Patients who don’t have a roof over their heads, enough to eat, stable family situations or a good support network are less likely to achieve optimal health outcomes. Interpreting in a health care setting inevitably involves intersection with social services. In this webinar, Cynthia Mauleón will familiarize interpreters with concepts and terminology related to the American healthcare and social services systems.

After this webinar, participants will be able to:

  • Understand the basic format of medical appointments from start to finish.
  • Become familiar with the different types of medical providers and other helping roles.
  • Have a basic understanding of health insurance concepts and terminology.

Interpreting Medications & Other Treatments

Instructions about medications can be complicated, especially when weaning off a medication or adjusting a dosage. Never is precision in meaning more important than when interpreting information regarding medications. This is arguably the area that provides the highest risk of serious consequences due to interpreter error. In this webinar, instructor Cynthia Mauleón will share tips for eliminating interpreter errors, including incorporating the Teach Back method and devising an interpreter protocol.

After this webinar, participants will be familiar with:

  • Categories of Medicine
  • Medicine Administration Routes
  • Medical Devices/Treatments
  • Teach-Back Method
  • Outline an interpreter protocol for reducing medication errors.
